Dawgs bag 7 sacks of spuds
Dawgs were hungry after 8-straight losses
Malamute, 18 September 2005
Registering 7 sacks, the Washington Huskies held the Idaho Vandals to -4
yards rushing and gave Coach Tyrone Willingham his first Huskies victory with a
34-6 win over the Idaho Vandals at Husky Stadium in front of 61,183 fans. In the
process, Louis Rankin rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown, while Isaiah Stanback
passed for 145 yards and a touchdown and ran for another.
Stanback, who continues to improve over last season's performance, finished
with a pass efficiency of 140.5 on the game, completing 9 of 16 passes while
throwing one pick. Stanback's P.E. is 142.5 for his first 3 games.
DT Manase Hopoi, who registered 4 sacks, led a veteran defensive unit that
held the Vandals to 186 total net yards.
Washington snapped a 2-game losing streak this season and ended an 8-game
losing streak going back to the season before.
"It boosts everybody's morale," linebacker Scott White was quoted as saying.
"Everybody feels like now we know we can do it. Guys have been preaching all
along how good we are and the kind of team we're capable of being, and it showed
today."
The Huskies, who face Notre Dame next Saturday, showcased some talented
players in their victory; however, the UW could use an extra playmaker-or-two
and have more depth. The turmoil besetting the program over the last two years
is manifest in two poor recruiting seasons that have lowered the depth of the
squad.
Washington could bounce back as early as next season, providing Willingham
can sign a strong class of recruits in 2006. I am sure he is telling would-be
Dawgs that there will be plenty of opportunity to play early.
This season, Washington is capable of pulling off a big upset, and it could
come as early as next Saturday when its stadium is packed with rabid fans, who
sense a turnaround in Huskies fortunes.
