ET is fastest man on turf
Huskies beat Beavers, 38-17
; Frederick
sets record
By: Malamute, 18 October 2003
Charles "ET"
Frederick and Astroturf go together like Hugh McElhenny and Don Heinrich
once did.
Frederick's 371 all purpose yards tonight broke the record McElhenny set in
1949 when he played at Washington. Frederick caught 9 passes for 2 touchdowns
and ran a punt back for a score as the Huskies beat the Oregon State Beavers 38-17 at Reser Stadium in
Corvallis, Oregon.
McElhenny's former record of 362 all-purpose yards was set against
Washington State almost 54 years ago.
Frederick's touchdown pass receptions went for 35 and 87 yards. He also
ran a punt back 86 yards for a touchdown that gave the Dawgs a 7-0 lead in
the first quarter.
While its defense held Oregon State (5-2) in check, the Huskies (4-3)
climbed to a 14-0 lead in the second quarter, when TB Kenny James capped a
12-play, 72-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run.
Oregon State got on the board in the second quarter, with a touchdown
and field goal, to narrow the score 14-10 at the break.
QB Cody Pickett and Frederick sealed the win for Washington, when Pickett
combined with ET for 35-yard pass reception and a touchdown, which climaxed
a 86-yard drive early in the third quarter. Ahead 21-10, the Huskies never
looked back thanks to a dominating defense that held Steve Jackson, the
conference's leading rusher, to just 49 rushing yards on the night. The
Huskies intercepted QB Derek Anderson 3 times and sacked him 5 times for 29
yards.
The game was marred by 246 yards in penalties. OSU was flagged 15 times
for 141 yards, and the Dawgs were flagged 11 times for 105 yards. Several
times during the game, the officials spoke to the team captains, cautioning
them about the smack talk that seemed to occur on every play.
In its prior six games, the UW has played torpidly in one half of each
game, while outplaying its opponents in the other six halves. Tonight, the Dawgs put two well-played halves together for the first time this season.
Paradoxically, when the two teams met two years ago at Reser Stadium, a
game that Washington lost, it was Oregon State that appeared so much
faster on Reser's Astrotruf carpet. Tonight the UW played lightening fast,
particularly Charles "ET" Frederick, who had his best game as a Dawg.
Frederick is in his junior year at the UW.
