Runnin' with the Pac By: Lotti Bull, 16 August 2002
What
do Padraig Harrington and Joey Harrington have in common? Why are the Oregon
Ducks shameless? What are they saying in Cincinnati and Ypsilanti? What was
Jason Fife’s last and only movie role? What does Jim Moore of the Seattle
Times have to say about Rick Neuheisel? For the answer to these questions and
more, read Lotti Bull’s latest column.
Hi, Mal,
It’s been a busy week for me. According to press reports
around the league, here’s what happened last week.
-
Coach Rick Neuheisel of Washington participated in an
11-hour grilling by the NCAA, along with Colorado officials, both answering
questions related to 53 alleged secondary rules violations, fifty-one of which
occurred under Nueheisel’s coaching watch at Colorado from 1995 to 1998.
Colorado coach Gary Barnett said most of the inquiries were
directed at Neuheisel. "He got grilled pretty good.''
Neuheisel said his violations were inadvertent and that he might
have broken the spirit of the rules. Neuheisel had to answer to each and every
one of the 51 violations, 23 of them being bumping violations, i.e.,
face-to-face contact with prospects during periods when only video tape
evaluations or coaching discussions are permitted.
From Colorado’s standpoint, the NCAA staff recommended reducing
the allegation of "lack of institutional control'' to "failure to
monitor.''
A decision is expected in four to six weeks. As an
individual, Neuheisel
could be punished, not Washington. Will it be severe? Knowing the NCAA,
that’s an easy one to answer. Yep.
-
With the PGA tournament being
played this week, it is interesting to note that pro-golfer Padraig Harrington,
left, is quarterback Joey Harrington’s second cousin.
-
-
According to south Florida’s Sun-Sentinel, Washington
ranks seventh among the “Ten Easiest Colleges for Recruiting.” The buzz:
“Benefit of a multi-cultural,
beautiful city. Attractive and close enough to talent-rich California.”
-
Along with the
NCAA, Seattle Times' columnists, well known for having Neu penchants,
surprisingly nuked him last week. Here’s what they had to say.
Jim Moore: “As for this nonsense about inadvertent
errors, I have a hard time believing they were all unintentional.”
Bud Withers: “After hearing about all those illegal
recruiting "bumps,'' Neuheisel has stricken the word from the UW
terminology. Now they call it 'happenstance-and-run'' coverage.”
Laura Vecsey: “It's a good thing Neuheisel is comfortable with so many
eyes upon him.”
Blaine Neunham: “Still, there is every reason for
Washington to watch Neuheisel like no other coach.”
-
Bud
Withers quotes John Anderson, Washington’s kicker, as saying that he,
“kicked more over the summer at home in South Florida, but it was the quality
of the work that gives him confidence. For the first time in three years, he
reconnected with Nick Gancitano, a Penn State alumnus who tutors kickers.
‘He's just a really smart guy,’ Anderson said. ‘He knows what he's doing.
I got a lot of very good work in.’"

College football news.com combines polls from CFN, Sports
Illustrated, Sporting News, ESPN/USA Today Coaches, AP, and Fox Sports. In the
“Total Poll,” here’s how they rank: Washington 8th, WSU 12th,
Oregon 13th, Michigan 14th, and USC 19th.
-
Fox Sports picks a
winner: “Since Michigan was a good enough guest last year to gift wrap a win
for the Huskies, will U-Dub return the favor? Nope. While it's foolish to pick
against a defense like Michigan's at home, the offense (as it looks in July)
doesn't look like it can score. The Huskies have too many weapons on offense
and have just enough on D to pull off the upset.”
-
Here's a collage of stuff from Ted Miller (Seattle P-I)
and Bud Withers (Seattle Times), their player update and injury reports at
Washington: Offensive lineman Andre Reeves, most likely, will leave the program. OT Nathan
Rhodes, who reported in out of shape and at 330 pounds, will have a specialist
look at his back. DL Stanley Daniels awaits a decision from the NCAA clearing
house. Cornerback Roc Alexander can’t practice because of a shoulder injury.
Braxton Cleman is sidelined with a sore hamstring. WR Reggie Williams has a
sore foot and is not practicing. Linebacker Matt Lingley is out because of
minor injuries suffered in an auto accident.
-
Jason Fife, most likely a starter at quarterback for
Oregon this season, had a small speaking part in the 1993 film “Addams Family
Values.” Igor Olshansky, a 6-6, 296-pound sophomore defensive tackle at
Oregon, is from the Ukraine. Referring to the $250 thousand expenditure for the
New York City billboard featuring WR Keenan Howry, Adrian Wojnarowski in a
special to ESPN.com says, “These Ducks aren't strange. They're simply
shameless.”
-
Bob Toledo, who wants to “put last season behind
us,” brings his Bruins to Thousand Oaks, where his players will bond during
an eight-day training camp at Cal Lutheran University, starting on Saturday. Joe Curley of the
Ventura County Star quotes TE Mike Seidman as saying, “I think it will provide
an atmosphere we need. The season feels almost like starting all over.”
Toledo should be happy with the commute. He lives in North Ranch, just an out
pattern away from the CLU campus.”
-
Latest poem on the Internet:
From a Race Bannon to a Rich Gannon,
From a Husky in Cincinnati to a Wolverine in Ypsilanti,
From a wooler in Battleground to a miller in Battle Creek,
From a boat in Gig Harbor to a Carr in Ann Arbor,
From a Dawg in his pen to a wolf in his den,
They’re sayin', “Beat Mich-again.”
Ciao, Lotti
